The so called "
Narrenturm"
(Fool´s Tower) was built during the reign of Emperor
Joseph II
nd in 1784 as the first psychiatric hospital in Europe. Isidore
Canevale was planner and architect, but also had to follow the ideas and conceptions
of Dr. Joseph von Quarin, managing director of the hospital. In 1866, the hospital was
closed and henceforth it was used as a rooming house for nurses and doctors as well as
a depository of university clinics and workshops.
